Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Tim Merlier said: “I like to win but I also like to be a bit safer than I was today. I was in the washing machine and I found a gap with 300m to go. I tried to surprise the others but the headwind was strong. I was suffering. It’s been a difficult victory for me to get. My lead out man crashed yesterday so maybe it wasn’t a good idea to do his job today but he still did. Unfortunately we lost each other. I got boxed in and I thought I wasn’t going to make it but I found that gap. I won’t win tomorrow but I always like to race here so I will come back next year”.

The Red Jersey Tadej Pogacar said: “Today I kept my calm and didn’t try to break away. To be honest, I got bored, like most of the bunch today at some point. It’s also part of cycling. I tried to look around and admire the city but it’s always necessary to stay focused to avoid a crash. The UAE Tour is the home race for the team so it’s an honour for me to race here and fight for the victory tomorrow at Jebel Hafeet. I like this Red Jersey!”.
